আজকের periodic table একদিনে তৈরি হয়নি। Lavoisier ধাতু ও অধাতু হিসেবে মৌল ভাগ করেন, Dobereiner triads দেন, Newlands octave law দেন, Mendeleev atomic mass অনুযায়ী periodic table তৈরি করেন এবং কিছু অনাবিষ্কৃত মৌলের ভবিষ্যদ্বাণী করেন। পরে Moseley দেখান যে atomic number অনুযায়ী সাজালে অনেক ত্রুটি দূর হয়। এই development বুঝলে বোঝা যায় periodic table মূলত experimental observation ও scientific correction-এর ফল.
